The poems in Old Lady Porno are funny, horny, distracted, embodied, cerebral, grubby, elegant, and always moving at their own particular speed. They follow language as it slips sideways. A rainstorm becomes a special relationship between a car and a window. A Hinge date’s furniture preferences become a meditation on cellulite and the fantasy of returning as a mid-century modern sofawoman. There are Swedish fish, giant squid, bald divers, concrete nipples, pacifiers, toilets, weeds, philosophy, cars with generous hips, and sentences that seem to overhear themselves thinking.
This is a chapbook full of bodies and objects refusing to stay properly categorized. It is interested in desire, but also in embarrassment; in pleasure, but also in the ridiculous machinery surrounding it. The poems are smart without standing at the front of the room and asking to be recognized as such. They’re strange in the way actual thinking can be strange when you deregulate it. A thought gets distracted. An image makes a hard left. Something ridiculous becomes briefly devastating before moving on to the next thing.
This book is extremely alive. It feels loose without being careless, sexy without being precious, and funny without ever becoming a joke.
